City Commissioner, Joan Mallic provided me with an anonymous letter that had been sent to her and the local media. The sender states that it is not a prank letter. I believe him. In the interest of space I shall excerpt segments of his lengthy descriptive expose:

"I am an AIDS victim and really don't have too much time to live. really don't care who I may infect, until the day I die. I go to places like the bookstores and baths twice a week to have oral and anal sex with any man, whether he is single or married, black or white, straight or gay....I have had sex with them all in those places. I have a couple of friends with AIDS who do the same thing. If you don't close these places down, I and people like me will keep on going to them for sexual relief as long as we can get away with it. If you people don't don't care, I don't either."

If the identity of this man known we would be obliged to enact public health powers to remove him from society as a threat to public That, however, would be putting a bandaid on the problem. Some politicians suggest closing all sex establishments. I don't believe that the closing of all of these places will eliminate unsafe sexual behavior. It simply changes the locale. The Metroparks and Edgewater would be teeming. I have met with owners of bookstores and bathhouses in the past to discuss ways in which they might respond to the AIDS epidemic. A meeting is planned the end of this month to implement more radical changes.

But the most radical changes to be made must be made by those of us who are sexually active

Today the AIDS virus is behaviorally acquired. That means you have do something to get it. It is a disease passed almost exclusively among consenting adults. Nobody can give you the virus. You have to take it. I shall describe, in sexually explicit language, how to protect yourself during anal pleasuring in my next column.
